REVIEW: Green Book shows a south road trip filled with genuine emotions.

Updated: Mar 2, 2019

Green Book made by Peter Farrelly based on a true story is filled with genuine emotions, solid characterization and brilliant performances by Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen.

Set in 1960's, Green Book tells us the story of an implausible friendship between an Italian American driver aka Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen) and an African American pianist aka Donald Shirley (Mahershala Ali ), who has concert tour down to the deep south which doesn't usually welcome the people of his color. Tony Lip was a bouncer first , but then he was kicked out of his job. So he started searching for jobs and luckily he got the job of being a driver to Don Shirley, but later in the movie we come to know that his job is much more than being a driver. He has to protect Don in this south trip from the cruelties done to men because of his different color.

Viggo Mortensen as Tony Lip did a fantastic job , he has the right amounts of rage , humor and calmness to handle all the situations. He is an innocent husband who loves his wife too much but doesn't really knows how to express his feelings in a letter unless helped by Don and he also knows how to deal a situation that requires him to be angry and robust. Mahershala Ali obviously nailed his role, he knows how to portray totally different roles like , first he plays the role of feared man being subjected to discrimination done by a white man because of his color brilliantly and then in the next sequence he is playing the role of a confident maestro perfectly hiding all his wounds through makeup. Both of them played different personalities based on different situation marvelously. The direction of the movie is pretty simple and satisfactory. The suits store scene was so good and touching. Cinematography was on point. What makes this movie so special is it's script which is centered around a topic so uniquely, that it is not hard at all to feel the emotion with which the movie is made. And the music of the movie is pretty good to give you cold shivers. The movie is named Green Book based on the guide used by black travelers to stay away from places that could lead to any further difficulty and to recommend safe lodging, and over two hours, it’s fairly intense in its depiction of the everyday humiliations forced upon a black man at that time.

Overall, this movie has already won the golden globe for the best musical- comedy movie, this year and is definitely worth a watch. Won't be surprised if it wins a bunch of Oscar awards as well.
